School Community Council Meeting Agenda
Mon. Jan. 25, 2016, 6:00 p.m.

New PA Day – “The 2015 – 2016 School Year Calendar for Bluewater District School Board has been revised to include an additional Professional Activity Day (PA Day) on Friday, April 22, 2016.  This addition is an outcome of recent provincial negotiations, where it was determined that the number of PA Days in school boards across the province would increase from six to seven per school year.

Grade 8 Grad is scheduled for Mon. June 27.

New Kindergarten Teacher – Ms. McDonald is off on a medical leave ahead of her maternity leave.  Laura Gould has been hired as her replacement.

Christmas Concert – we had some discussion on the timing of our Christmas Concert at our Dec. SCC meeting, followed by emails.  Schools are split between daytime and evening concerts.  However, many evening concerts don’t include all students in the school – some have a couple of ‘concert bands’ and a primary choir for those who choose to sign up.  A daytime concert makes it easier to have everybody involved and ensure that no ‘acts’ are left short.  One suggestion was to let parents know of the concert date with as much advance warning as possible.  There are still some concerns around daytime concerts, especially for parents who work, but it was also noted that the concert was very well attended and that every class / child was able to participate.

Ipads – we ordered new ipads before Christmas and are awaiting their arrival

$500 Parents Reaching Out (PRO) Grant – Council decided to use this year’s money to support the Anti-Bullying Magic Show that parents are invited to attend

The Anti-Bulling Magic Show – Feb. 16 – “Husband & Wife duo, Brent & Sarah Nicholls, take the stage as IncrediBrent & Super Sarah in this fast paced, funny magic show that delivers an inspiring message about understanding and overcoming bullying.

In this interactive assembly presentation Brent and Sarah use their unique story and performance experience to engage and empower students by sharing their "Secrets of Magic" and how they overcame being bullied.

This character building assembly will effectively:
•Demonstrate the power and importance of healthy self confidence and overcoming self doubt•Offer advice on how to develop a positive self image•Share personal stories that illustrate how to overcome bullying and stay positive in the face of negativity•Highlight different types of bullying: physical, verbal, social & electronic
•Help students create an inclusive school environment•Offer take-aways that will allow the learning to continue in the classroom”
Turkey Dinner – we had a very enjoyable turkey dinner on Dec. 16.  At our last meeting it was suggested that Gr. 8 teacher meet with gr. 8 parents to see if they are interested ahead of planning process.  Ms. Grubb said there is normally a meeting at fall BBQ, but there was no BBQ this fall.  We anticipate having a meeting for gr 8 parents next fall to discuss fundraisers.  It was also noted at the meeting that the event was also quite worthwhile as a fundraiser this year.

Volleyball – thank you to Ms. Ellis, Mr. Quinn and Ms. Grubb for running intramurals.  Congratulations to the boys’ for a second place finish at regional tournament and to the girls for finishing 1st in the region!  The girls will compete at the district level on Jan. 28.

Story telling in our gym is scheduled for Thurs. Feb. 11 with speeches on Fri. Feb. 12.  The snow date for both competitions is Wed. Feb. 17.  The Legion event is on Sun. Feb. 21.

Proposed School Year Calendar 2016-2017 – FEEDBACK requested
Background -“Each year the Ministry of Education proposes a school year calendar for the upcoming year.  The Ministry is suggesting the Christmas break be Monday, December 19, 2016 through to Friday, December 30, 2016.

Bluewater District School Board Calendar Committee is proposing a modified School Year Calendar for 2016-2017. The proposed modified calendar recommends that the Christmas break be Monday, December 26, 2016 through to Friday January 6, 2017.

In accordance with Regulation 304, we are soliciting feedback from School Councils and the school community regarding the suggested changes to the Christmas break.

Please see attached Bluewater District School Board School Year Calendar 2016-2017 Modified Draft.

Amy Fry is going to send in our SCC input which is to support Bluewater’s proposal of scheduling Christmas holidays from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6.

New Business:

Science Fair – a suggestion was made that the school alternate years between public speaking and science fair, and a second one was made to have story telling and speeches up to gr. 6, followed by science fair in gr. 7 and 8.

Skating – the school generally follows the safety guidelines of Ontario Physical and Health Education Association (OPHEA), who mandate that we inform parents of the benefits of wearing a helmet, but do not require that helmets be worn for experienced skaters.

Lunch Monitors – Grade 8 students generally very willingly volunteer their time to help as lunch monitors (which isn’t the case in many schools).  Teachers are also on duty supervising students.  The suitability of lunch monitors is made on a case by case basis if problems arise.

No bus’ alerts – a comment was made that the system of having bus cancellations emailed is working well and info. is received faster than waiting for it on the radio

Fall Fair – a comment of appreciation was made for Ripley staff donating their time to help set up and take down the fall fair.

Next Meeting Dates:  Mon. Mar. 7, Mon. May 2 and Mon. June 6, all at 6:00 p.m.
